Covers Zombicide: Dead West
Update April 11, 2025

I finally worked my way through my print queue to return to this project. I managed to get everything from the base pledge plus Lone Horse Pack into the original box. The Dead West box and the Horse box and all original inserts are getting recycled. Why this mix of components? Because that's what I personally pledged for. I'm not likely to ever pledge all-in on another CMON game.

Compromises

I realized that this game just isn't going to land on the table often enough for me to really fine tune and tweak these inserts to perfection, so here are the compromises I have made:

• No separation of Survivors into their classes.
• I think this is totally doable with an investment of time, but might mean the Abominations get bumped out.

• The Runners and Walkers boxes are a bit too big, which wastes some space.

• The Abominations box is a tight fit and requires some careful packing.
• This could be improved significantly if the Runners and Walkers were trimmed down.

• There is a wasted gap where I pivoted away from my old design to the new design.

On the upside, this recovers a good amount of shelf space as-is and while not making setup and teardown as streamlined as possible, it is still much quicker than with the original inserts.

Layout

• Tiles go in the box first followed by my component trays (link below).

• All minis and Survivor cards go into their respective boxes.
• I added labels in my slicer to the bottom of the original boxes that didn't have them.

• The Survivor minis are split between a copy of the Brute box and a new tray that fits under the Dashboards.

• The horses fit nicely in the Misc 2 box, which stacks with Survivor Cards box.
• If you don't have horses, this box can be used to hold some of the smaller Abominations to make them easier to pack.

• The models in the ‘Old’ folder are deprecated and will not work with the new Abominations and extra Brutes/Survivors box.

Printing

I printed my with a 0.4 nozzle and 0.2 layer heights, but my original setup of 0.6 nozzle and 0.4 layers should still be fine.

Original Summary

Holds all Zombicide Undead or Alive components from the base game plus the “Dead West” Kickstarter extras box, except for Abominations. Many of the Abominations will fit in here, but not all of them as some are simply too big.

These boxes are designed to fit in the “upper” layer of the game box, on top of the tiles and the lower layer component trays . There is about 5mm of space at the top for the rule books.

Motivation

I think the clear plastic trays that come with the game are too slow to use and take up too much space, so I use boxes to dump them all in.

Print Setup

I printed these on a Mk3S+ with a 0.6mm nozzle at 0.4mm layer heights. Wall thickness is 1.2mm, which is plenty strong for this nozzle diameter. I used Hatchbox PETG.

My print bed thermistor wire broke during the first batch so my boxes did not complete, but they got far enough along that I know they will fit perfectly in the game box with all the minis. I will update this once my printer is fixed.

How I Made These

Each of these boxes was created using my "volume estimator" tool , so I know all the minis fit in each box.

Given all the necessary volumes, I then modeled them inside a game box in Fusion 360.

Future Work

I might do a redesign where all the Survivors (aka Heroes) are organized by the four classes instead of “base” vs “KS”, as there are a ridiculous number of KS Heroes.
