Model Description
What is Zendo?

Zendo is a board game of inductive logic and deduction, created by Kory Heath. It is an asymmetrical game where one player takes on the role of the "Master" and the other players are the "Students".
The goal of the game is unique: to discover a secret rule chosen by the Master, by observing and creating small geometric structures. It is literally the scientific method (formulating a hypothesis, testing it, adjusting it) transformed into a board game!

Components

The game consists of translucent plastic pieces of different colors (usually red, yellow, blue) and different shapes (pyramids, blocks, prisms). There are also marking tokens (white discs for "Yes" and black ones for "No") and small green cubes called "guessing stones".

How a Game Plays Out
  • The Master chooses a rule: For example, the secret rule could be: "The structure must contain at least one blue piece that does not touch the table." The students do not know this rule.
  • Setup: The Master builds two starting structures. One follows their rule (they place a white token next to it) and the other does not (they place a black token next to it).
  • The Students' Turn: On their turn, a student builds a new structure using the pieces of their choice, then chooses one of these two actions:
  • Tell: The Master looks at the structure and simply places a white or black token next to it to indicate whether or not it satisfies the secret rule.
  • Quiz: The student forces all other players to guess whether their structure follows the rule. Everyone hides a white or black token in their hand, and then they are revealed at the same time. The Master gives the correct answer. Those who guessed correctly win a guessing stone.
  • Guessing the Rule: If a player has a guessing stone, they can spend it at the end of their turn to state a theory out loud (e.g., "I think the rule is that there must always be a piece pointing upwards!" ).
  • Refutation: If the student's proposition is incorrect, the Master does not just say "no". They must prove the student wrong by building a new structure that contradicts the student's theory while still following their own secret rule (or vice versa).

The game ends as soon as a student states the exact rule and becomes the winner.

There is no luck involved. You have to run experiments by building very specific structures to isolate a variable (for example, changing just the color of a piece to see if the result changes), observe the consequences, and adjust your theory. It is a very calm, almost contemplative game that triggers real moments of enlightenment when your brain clicks and finally understands the logic!

Print it!

You can choose any color. The only needs is to have 3 differents colors for each “set” of figures and two for the “disks” (One for Ok, one for not OK).

The storage box is printed using filament switching, without purging to avoid wastes

Each pieces has some spares (noted in plate name). Some are tiny and it's smarter to have some in spare!

I tried to use a PLA ice blue translucent filament to print the cover. I'm not really satisfied of the result. Use another filament or change the printing settings to get a better result (I'm very interressed to get your result!)

The cover clip well on the storage box, but can be a little tricky to remove the firsts times. Press softly on the side of the box can help.
