Print-in-Place Folding Chess & Backgammon Board

I originally set out to print a folding chess board I could take anywhere. After searching through MakerWorld, I realized something was missing.

I could not find a design that combined all five things I was looking for:

• a hinged board
• print-in-place
• the ability to play both chess and backgammon
• maximum size on a 10" × 10" (256mm x 256mm) build plate
• roomy enough when closed to store both chess and backgammon sets when closed
• a design that would close securely into a solid case

On top of that, I wanted something practical. Not just a board, but a compact case that keeps everything together.

So I decided to design my own…

This model was printed in one piece (I used PLA), including fully functional hinges, and is sized to use every possible millimeter of a 256 mm (10") build plate. It opens into a clean backgammon layout and closes into a sturdy, roomy case that can hold your game pieces inside.

After printing a few for myself, I shared them with friends… and that was it. Everyone wanted one. So instead of keeping it to myself, I decided to share it with the world.

The table is intentionally designed with near-zero clearance in the first few layers .
The first time you close it, you will need to apply a bit of force. This is by design.

• The tight tolerance in the first layers ensures a perfectly flat, seamless playing surface when opened
• After the first bend, the hinge frees up
• From that point on, the board opens and closes securely with a satisfying “clack”

Because this model uses almost the entire build plate , first layer adhesion is critical.
If the first layer lifts even slightly, the print can fail.

• This plate provided excellent adhesion across the full surface without additional preparation

• Make sure the plate is perfectly clean (no residue, grease, or dust)
• Consider applying a light layer of glue for extra adhesion
• Ensure your first layer is well-tuned before starting the print

• Avoid drafts or rapid temperature changes during the first layers
• Double-check bed leveling if you have not printed large flat parts recently
• A clean and consistent first layer will also ensure the hinge moves freely after printing
