Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle Earth Travel Case (Fits Sleeves and Promo Tiles)

This is a travel case for the board game Lord of the Rings: Duel for Middle Earth from Repos Production. My partner and I enjoy this game a lot and would love to have it as one of the games we bring when we travel but the box is a bit larger than is necessary for its components (and cardboard boxes tend to get beat up in luggage) so I designed this case as a solution. It is designed to accommodate sleeved cards as well as the 2 promotional landmark tiles available for the game. When you aren't traveling, this case can sit inside the larger (and prettier) box on your game shelf and act as a regular organizer.

The full organizer is split into 3 pieces that need to be 3d printed:

• LotR_Duel_MainBody provides organization for the cards, coins, units/fortresses, and ring track.

• LotR_Duel_Insert is an inlay for the main body which provides organization for the landmark tiles and the alliance tokens.

• LotR_Duel_Lid ….is the lid.

In addition to the 3d-printed pieces, there are a few 2d-printed items:

• Required: The LotR_Duel_Map_Image file provided is a cropped version of the game's map such that the aspect ratio (~4:3) matches what will fit in the travel case. This is a required print, as the standard map for the game will not fit in this design. You'll want to print this image such that the dimensions are roughly 196x147mm . After printing, cut out the image and affix it to a cardboard backing. The organizer provides ~4mm of clearance between the lid and the top of the main body/insert, so find a suitable cardboard that will fill most of this gap (otherwise the components may fall out of their specified areas in the organizer).
• If you don't want to bother with a cardboard map, I've included “NoCardboard” variants for the Main Body and Lid prints. This provides only 1mm of clearance between the lid and top of the main body/insert.

• Optional: The LotR_Duel_Rules_and_Ref_Guide pdf file (credit: ScaperDad on BGG) is a condensed version of the game's rulebook as well as a reference for the alliance token abilities. If you prefer to use your phone to download the rulebook and reference then you can skip this item.

• Optional: The LotR_Card_Overview pdf file (credit: Bamatthy on BGG) is a quick reference for the cards available in each chapter of the game.

*Note: the two optional prints are not sized in relation to this travel case, but printing them as-is with typical printing margins (on A4 or Letter sized paper) should allow you to trim said margins and easily “hamburger fold" them to fit in the case.

No supports are required for any of the models. I printed mine at .2mm layer heights in PLA on a Bambu X1C. Suggested printing orientations are shown in the provided pictures.

I've used decent quality sleeves for my cards (GameGenic matte “Catan” sleeves) so it is likely that your sleeved cards will fit. I'm sure there are nicer sleeves available that might be bulkier and have larger dimensions, so if you have concerns about this organizer working with your sleeves, try cutting up the models and doing some test prints before printing the entire design.

CAD files are provided in both Fusion 360 project format and STEP file format.

I've made small usability improvements to the models since printing mine which aren't shown in the pictures of my print:

• A gap has been added to the wall-side of the insert which makes it easier to remove the insert from the main body.

• Small tabs have been added to the main body under the finger gaps of the lid to provide something to push off when removing the lid.

In addition, my printout of the map is not quite 4:3 so there's a bit more gap between the sides of the map and the sides of the organizer than you will have.
