100 chip tray for Ruben's Mini Chips with magnetic closure and counting channel

This is a chip tray I designed to hold my basic set of 100 chips, suitable for most euro games. I got tired of carrying around the original box I had as well as a counting tray, so I decided to merge them into one object. This was made over many iterations and tests using Claude Code and Gemini CLI to hack on the openscad code and eventually get things into the shape I wanted.

It features:

Reversible design that can act as a lid

Magnetic closure using eight 8mm diameter x 6mm tall magnets (this could probably be scaled down, I just had some... they ended up being a little too strong so I recessed them about 0.4mm and chamfered the "top" edge of the tray for safety. The holes are designed to be press fit, but that may not always work perfectly, in which case a drop of CA glue usually does the trick

Chamfillet edges on the top/bottom

Fillet corners

Chamfered edges in most places

Finger notches on the ends for ease of opening

Notches on the sides for optional rubber band(s)

Finger notches for the main chip channels

Fillets between the chip channels

Vent holes under the magnet holes to make it easier to insert them (and maybe extract them, if necessary)

And, of course, the counting channel

I printed it with PETG and 15% infill, but you could probably get by with 10%... Try it and let me know in the comments.

I am including the openscad file in case you need to make tweaks or alterations. This version is pretty much tuned for my printer and PETG and the cheapo magnets I had on hand, so the dimensions may need some tweaking when those variables change. Most of the variables are at the top and pretty well labeled and named. Other ideas might be to expand the size (although that may be a little tricky) or remove the magnet holes or make them smaller.

There is a test version of the model that only prints one corner with one counting section and one regular section if you want to verify the fit before embarking on the whole print. However, if you do decide to tweak and test things, I would recommend making the vent hole larger in diameter (but smaller than the magnet diameter) to make it easier to push the magnets back out if they are well seated after testing.

The sorting tray idea was borrowed from another model I had seen before, but everything was created from scratch. Most of the design ideas were mine, although the chamfer and press fit details for the magnet holes were a suggestion from Claude Code when I was asking what else might be a good idea to improve the design. The chamfers on the top edge of the model were added when I discovered that 90 degree angles are too sharp and the magnets I used are too strong when flush mounted in the holes. I am happy to report that my thumb has almost fully recovered.
