Fort Vancouver Tactile Map Collection

These maps were made for the Mobility Matters 2021 virtual conference .

These maps will be used for a remote virtual-tour of the buildings at Fort Vancouver, a historical site in Vancouver, Washington. The tour will be led by teachers from the Washington State School for the Blind, with students attending from across the USA.

The 4 maps include tactile representations of the important features in each room. The tactile symbols are designed to be easily located and distinguished by blind learners.

Mobility Matters is hosted by Portland State University's Orientation & Mobility (O&M) and Visually Impaired Learning (VIL) Programs, supported by the American Printing House for the Blind, the National Park Service, and the Portland State University Digital City Testbed Center.

I designed this model with a .28mm layer height in mind, but you can print it at whatever layer height you like.

Post-Printing

Examine and clean your map before using as a tactile model. Remove any loose bits of plastic that may feel sharp to the touch (from stringing or other printing artifacts).

Designed in collaboration with staff from the Washington State School for the Blind and instructors and students in Portland State University's Orientation and Mobility and Visually Impaired Learners programs.

• We started the design with building floor plans and hand drawn maps to emphasize key features in the room.

• These maps were then recreated in Adobe Illustrator and saved as SVG files.

• The SVG files were opened in Fusion 360 and made into a 3D model.

• Additional 3D features were added in Tinkercad: arrows, fur piles, hay stacks, trees.

• Some minor edits were done in Nomad Sculpt: texture on fur piles, smoothing of garden bed texture.

These maps were designed to be printed fast, so tall layer heights are encouraged.
