Xia magnetic tile protectors and a holder

Xia: Legend of a Drift System is my favorite game, and I've designed some easy-to-print magnetic protectors for the game tiles that do double duty: shielding the tiles from wear while keeping the board locked together satisfyingly tight during play. Each protector takes 12 small magnets—3mm by 2mm—pressed into their slots after printing, where the tile itself holds them firmly in place. The magnets run in pairs along the edges, in slots I've labeled 'A' and 'B'. All 'A' slots should have the same pole facing outward, with 'B' slots facing the opposite direction. Getting the first tile right is the hard part; after that, you can use it as a reference to orient every magnet that follows. Once I had the first few done, I found a real rhythm to it—fingers moving from slot to slot, flipping and pressing each magnet flush—and could finish a full protector in about 90 seconds. The fit between tile and protector is snug by design. I've found the easiest insertion method is to bow the tile slightly in the middle as you seat it, letting it flatten out naturally once it's fully in.

The print itself is straightforward—no supports needed. Any 3mm x 2mm magnets will work, but here are the ones I used:

Knowing that players who invest in tile protectors are the same ones who value a meticulously organized game box, I’ve included a companion tile holder. It’s sized to snugly cradle each protected tile. As someone who regularly supplements the base game with custom fan-made tiles, I made sure the holder has additional capacity—enough space to comfortably store eight or more extra tiles.
