Fallout board game player board magnetic pegs

I have several problems with the way the pegs are used in the player boards for the Fallout board game.

• After a while, the peg holes will wear out.

• There are only four sets of pegs, but there are five characters. I like to make ziplock bags of everything a player needs, and I can't keep the pegs in these bags.

• If I lose a peg, I don't think I'll be able to get a replacement easily from Asmodee.

I tried printing replacement pegs, but I could not get the size exactly right. My printer just isn't that accurate. I could use a SLA printer, but then I would need to paint the pegs.

So I came up with the idea of using small magnets. You will need the following:

• 100 5x1mm magnets. These are stuffed into the holes (there are 25 holes per board, so every magnet will be used!)

• 12,15, or 30 4x1mm magnets. These are attached to the pegs. You can't use 5x1 magnets for the pegs because they won't fit easily in the holes. Technically you need at least 12, one per board. 15 gives you one per character, and 30 gives you one per character with the New California expansion. Actually, should you probably make more than you need so that you have spares. I recommend at least 33 so that you have everything for the expansion and one spare of each color.

• Green, red, and grey filament. You can also paint the pegs if you don't to buy three spools of filament just for this, but I can't vouch for the quality of the appearance.

• Superglue, preferably a thick gel.

I've attached pictures showing the process. I'll provide detailed instructions later. I also included a picture of the superglue that I use. It's a thick gel that takes a while to dry, so it's excellent for models. You use a VERY tiny droplet.

The idea of the underlays is that the magnets are glued to the underlay and not the board. This means that you can, if you really want, remove the magnets without damaging the board. One of the reasons you use 5mm magnets is that the fit very snugly into the holes. With 17 snug magnets glued to one underlay, nothing will fall out. Get it, “fall out”????
