I love Star Trek Fleet Captains but those super thin location tiles are prone to scattering every time you make a move, or touch them, or breathe on them.
I adapted another hex tile system to work with the game pieces, more or less keeping them together and connected to the command post tile.
The card tiles still are what they are. They are much more secure while being held by the frame, but they are still sensitive to humidity caused curling. As such, they may still want to escape the grid , depending on which way they may be flexing. I find this solution so much better than nothing though.
The tiles in STFC are not true hexagons but they are closer than they look. The short span distance is only about 1.7mm different than the long span distance. I decided to keep the hex holders as true hexagons, both to keep set-up less cumbersome, and also to allow the tiles, once flipped, to be oriented towards the player who revealed it, no matter the player count. I kept a minute gap on the two symmetrical sides, so the edges of the fragile card tiles wouldn't get roughed up coming in and out. This means there is about a 2mm gap on the asymmetrical side. The tiles are black and if you print the frames in black, it is barely noticeable and the tiles still feel pretty secure.
You need to print one _M and one _F command posts and 27 tile holders for a 2 player game. You need two _M and two F and 45 tiles for a 4 player game. You need three _M for a 3 player game.
As is the case with @DrFeelGood 's design, the tile holders may be stacked for tidy storage.
I adapted another creator's (DrFeelGood) grid system and added Command Post holders to keep the play area from blowing away every time someone waved their arm. I find it an improvement. Your mileage may vary.
