Edit 7/10/25: Added more space for the magnets on the compass box, they were a little too tight.
Edit 11/21/25: Added a new version of the compass body that will print easier on the bottom.
I love this game and I knew I could do better, so introducing my compass boxes and new coins! Original insert found here . Needs 8 magnets size 6x3mm.
The compass boxes are borrowed from my In the Footsteps of Darwin organizer, and sized to fit the extra bits. It's much more fun to have your own personal compass than to share a resource box. The Coin boxes are sized to fit about half of the tokens, so print two for ease.
The best part is COINS! I don't know about you but every time I play this game I feel like I accidentally grab the wrong number and the fact that the numbers are only on one side drives me batty. These are very basic coins but print without supports and it will save your game. Trust me.
PRINT INSTRUCTIONS:
• Print (4) Compass Body
• Print (4) Compass Lid (can be printed in multicolor or color change at layer height, instructions below.
• Print (2) Coins Only lid and (2) Coins Only box
• Print (30) #1 coins, and (20) each of #5, #10, and #50.
Multicolor printing: In your slicer right click the object and select Split>to parts . Select the colors for printing. PRO TIP: first make the entire object the color of the design and then you only have to change the color of the main piece instead of every small piece.
Layer Height Color Change: The compass lid is designed to work for color change at layer height. In your slicer you can add a pause/color change at the appropriate layer. This is a different process depending on the slicer, but usually follows these steps. Slice the object, then drag until you reach the layer you want to change color. Right click on the layer bar and select “Add Color Change” or “Change Filament”. Reslice the object and check to be sure you have selected the correct layer. Your printer will either pause and walk you through a color change, or automatically change color.
Hinge Assembly:
Magnets : Print my Magic Magnet Tool before assembly to make this step easier. Add one drop of superglue or similar glue, then insert 6mm x 3mm magnets into each cavity. Repeat for opposite side making sure to reverse the polarity. Let dry completely before adding game components or testing magnets.
Final Assembly: After printing assemble all hinged boxes. Take a length of scrap filament longer than the hinge and slide it carefully in the appropriate space. If it needs a little push take some pliers and grab the filament 3-4mm away from the box and push toward the box. Only do a few mm at a time or the filament will snap! Slide until you have 2ish mm sticking out the side of the box, and snip the other side so 2ish mm is on that side as well.
Next take a flame or heat source and carefully heat the end of the filament for 1-2 seconds–careful not to deform the box. Quickly flatten the hot excess filament against a hard surface (metal, granite, etc–NOT plastic). I usually put one finger on the opposite (non heated) side as I push down to keep the filament from sliding the other way. Repeat for the other side. The hinge pin should now be locked in place. Be careful with the player box, if the hinge pin gets stuck to both sides then it makes the hinge twist which could cause it to break. If that happens try to gently loosen the pin from one side so it can spin freely.
