Intoduction

I wasn’t satisfied with the 3D-printable DM screens I found online, so I decided to design my own. It’s half wood, half printed—a perfect balance between natural materials and plastic, while reducing filament usage at the same time.

All you need is a piece of an old wooden board and your 3D printer!

What will you need?
Three rectangular boards:

One front board

Recommended thickness: ~10 mm

Two side boards (one for each wing of the screen)

Cannot be longer than half of the front board

Best if thinner than the front board

You can use a second board similar to the front one and cut it in half

All three boards should have the same height

Boards can be wooden, metal, or any material you prefer

Two round hinge rods:

Diameter: ~5 mm (around half the thickness of the front board)

You can find wooden or metal ones in almost every DIY store or print them by yourself

Printed parts:
Required:

Left middle hinge

Left top hinge

Left bottom hinge

Right middle hinge

Right top hinge

Right bottom hinge

Optional:

D&D logo (or any custom front decoration)

Left and right wing flourishes (purely decorative)

And Glue to put all of these together.
Customizing the design

This is a very important part . If you’re using boards with different dimensions than mine (see below) —or if you want to change anything—you’ll need to adjust the project parameters.

If you don’t have Fusion 360, leave a comment and I’ll create a customized .stl file for you!

You can also use example files , which are designed to fit:

30x50cm front board, 10mm thick

two 30x25cm side boards, 3mm thick

6mm rod

Step by step

Download the Dm screen parametric.f3d file

Launch Fusion 360 and open the downloaded file

Click change parameters

Adjust the parameters as needed ( see the parameters below )

Optionally, customize the flourishes by editing the sketches directly

Export the file as .stl / .step

Load the file into your slicer and delete objects marked ref

These are reference models of the boards and don’t need to be printed

Arrange the models as you like it and print

Assembly

See the images above!!!

Prepare the boards and hinge rods.
This is the last moment to sand, stain, or paint the boards.

Glue the top and bottom hinges to the front board .

Insert the middle hinge into the right side board and glue it in place.

Glue the decorative flourishes to the right side board (optional).

Insert the right side board’s hinge assembly into the gap between the front board hinges.

Insert the hinge rod into the top hole.
If it doesn’t fit, lightly sand the rod until it slides in smoothly.

Repeat the same steps for the left side board .

Glue the logo (or any front decoration) onto the front board.

Done!!!
