Replacement LEDs are cheap and easy to purchase. • The average stronghold model size is about 30mm round (1.25") including the base, which takes up slightly less room than the stronghold symbol on the board. You can also nudge the models to the edge of the region, out of the way of the troops if desired. Cities are 20mm x 15mm (.80" x .60"), Towns are 15mm x 15mm (.60" x .60") • 3D printed at a fine level of detail • Available with hand-applied paint effects (some color, dark wash and dry brushing) for enhanced realism • Bases are color-coded to indicate friendly or shadow player ownership of a settlement • While resin models could provide even finer detail, I've found that these provide enough beauty and detail to greatly enhance the gameplay. When I tried to gauge interest from the War of the Ring community, I received overwhelming support to adapt my products to this fantastic game. While I could have stopped at just adapting the strongholds, I decided to keep going and include the cities and towns. While the cities and towns are smaller and can't take LED lights, they do add a lot more to the atmosphere of the game. While I know the game has been around for many years and there are many 3D upgrade options, this set stands out as unique due to the lighting effects, and the affordability of a completely painted solution. In terms of whether they enhance gameplay - I am not a seasoned WOTR player. But I have played, and I have noticed that with troops on the board it is difficult to see where they are. These 3D models really allow you to notice exactly where troops are, especially the lit strongholds. It definitely adds another level of excitement to the game! Painted vs. Unpainted Models • If you want more realism, the painted models add some color, dark washes and dry brush effects to bring out the model detail. • The painting isn't finely detailed, which would take hours to accomplish and cost far too much. If you want to go to that level, I suggest purchasing the unpainted models and either painting them yourself or paying someone who does miniature painting. • Both painted and unpainted models have the ability to light up. 3D Model Appearance • Since products are hand-made to order, yours may look slightly different depending on shades of PLA used and other factors. • 3D Printed in PLA at an optimal quality, which is the quality that still retains the detail of the models (one set takes about 15 hours to print). However, looking closely at the models you'll be able to see the normal layer lines and slight imperfections that are common to FDM printers. They don't make the models look any worse, it's just how they are and gives them character. • See the included photos to understand model appearance. • I reserve the right to make minor improvements in models, painting, etc. over time :-) 3D Model Size and Fit • The average stronghold model size is about 30mm round (1.25") including the base, which takes up slightly less room than the stronghold symbol on the board. Cities are 20mm x 15mm (.80" x .60"), Towns are 15mm x 15mm (.60" x .60"). • You can also nudge the models to the edge of a region to allow more area for gathering troops together. • The models are not meant to be to scale. They are more like icons to represent their locations. Some are a single dwelling, others are entire cities or mountains. But they all look great and fit together well. Color Coded Bases • The models each have a color-coded base (blue for friendly, red for shadow). With the included LEDs, the stronghold bases glow, making it very easy to locate them and see their current ownership. • Cities and towns have a blue or red base that they sit on, that can be swapped if conquered. These can take place of the settlement control markers if desired. About the Lights • Keep them out of reach of young children and animals, as they can cause harm if ingested. • Enough LEDs are included to light all of the havens, strongholds and Mount Doom. These are inexpensive, disposable round LEDs that when you pull out the tab they turn on. The tab can be re-inserted to to them off. • A single LED can stay lit for 24 hours, although its brightness will diminish over time. Packs of additional lights can be purchased inexpensively online for only 10 cents each and can usually be found worldwide. • One other consideration with lighting is whether to turn the LED with its bulb up or down in the base. It’s up to you - placing the bulb up will light up the model more intensely. Placing it with the bulb down will make its base “glow” which is also a cool effect, plus it does still give the model some subtle lighting. You can try both ways to see which you prefer. • Lastly, the models look great without any interior lighting. If you’re in a rush to set the game up or the LEDs have died, just place the models out without LEDs.
