Multicolor Chess Board and Box
Please support Oak by Liking/Boosting their Print on Printables.
This is a multicolor chess board with a recessed knight symbol on the back, separated into components for easy color assignment in your slicer. It can slide into a matching divided box that can be used to store chess pieces, in which case the knight symbol can be put on top for an elegant chess box.
The chess pieces in the photos are from https://www.printables.com/model/959776-multicolor-spiral-chess-remix . I've added a model of a template that can be used for cutting foam so it would match these pieces, as shown in the pictures.
Printing tips:
• At default size of 30mm^2 per chess square, this needs a build plate at least 265mm squared. But it's of course simple to scale this to anything on the xy axis to fit smaller build plates.
• No supports required. The tolerances of sliding the lid into the box assume 0.4 nozzle and 0.2 layer height, but it's loose enough to probably also work well with other sizes.
• The knight symbol on the back is 0.2mm thick, with 1mm thick highlights. It means that it can result in a striking effect if you use a semi-transparent or high TD filament.
• This model can actually be just a generic divided box with a sliding lid, if you eliminate the chess-related stuff by picking the same material for all the different components on the board :-)
• The foam I used is this 1-inch-thick PU foam: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C3VQDNMP/ , but any thickness under 35mm will do.
• I printed the foam-cutout-template with no bottom and top layers, only (dense) infill. It saves time and material, and the holes in the infill can then be used to put pins through to anchor the foam while cutting it.
• To cut the foam, I placed the template over two layers (one to cut, one sacrificial layer to make it easier to cut the top one), then did a first pass with x-acto knife and a second pass with a sharp kitchen knife, both passes using sawing motions.
The graphic of the knight piece is from https://www.pngegg.com/en/png-zgycb/ which indicates it is allowed for non-commercial use.
The design is somewhat inspired by https://www.printables.com/model/460618-chessboard-with-box .
