“There is nothing but a corporal’s guard in the fort. Go and take possession of it.” –Admiral Dahlgren to Commander Thomas H. Stevens, leader of the naval assault group to take Fort Sumter.
Following the capture of Fort Wagner on September 7th, and the protracted bombardment of Fort Sumter by the Union navy’s ironclads as well as army land batteries, an assault to take the fort’s ruins was planned. Admiral Dahlgren and General Gilmore both felt that securing Fort Sumter’s capture would not only lead to Charleston’s surrender, but send a clear signal that the Confederacy’s days were numbered.
