About the Game

ECO Games are learning tools designed by Winrock International that educate players about the different impacts community decisions can have on water, climate, environment, livelihoods and the long-term potential for communities to thrive.

In each game, a moderator sets up the game so each player has tokens for cash, soil health, and land use. In each of four rounds, players represent farmers making land use decisions that must balance resources (cash, soil health, water…). Random agricultural and disaster events must be paid for after each round of land use decisions are made. Disasters escalate to represent climate change.

Four games have been developed as part of the ECO Game suite of tools, each with different focus areas and key learning outcomes:

Caribbean Climate Resilience (CCR) Game: developed under the USDA Caribbean Climate Hub Project “Enabling climate-smart decisions for agriculture and forestry in the U.S. Caribbean.” ECO Game: Northern Ghana: developed under the USAID Ghana Agriculture and Natural Resource Management (USAID AgNRM) Program, ECO Game: Ghana Deforestation-Free Cocoa: developed under USAID’s Supporting Deforestation-Free Cocoa in Ghana), and ECO Game: Water Security: developed under the USAID Sustainable Water Partnership.
