About the Game

For more than a decade after the Spanish Civil War, anti-Francoist guerrilla groups composed of combatants and civilians that supported the extinct Second Spanish Republic, maintained a rural and armed resistance across the whole Spain. Designed with historical accuracy and accessible mechanics (card-driven game, blocks, point-to-point map), the game allows players to explore the different political, military and social dynamics that marked this struggle in post-war Spain.

Guerrilleros is an asymmetric and strategic game for two players that recreates the uneven conflict between the guerrillas and the forces of the dictatorship. Despite the actions of these maquis or 'guerrilleros' began with the Civil War in 1936, their relevance and number rose after its end in 1939, reaching its peak activity on the years between 1944 and 1952 - right where the game is set.

The maquis player cannot expect a military victory yet it can slowly but seriously harm the prestige of the regime in an attempt to win the game. The guerrilleros will need to invest in their mere survival, remaining hidden, releasing propaganda, and launching calculated and timely attacks to strategic regime positions. In turn, the regime player must try to locate, isolate and eliminate all 'agrupaciones guerrilleras', the main and most organised guerrilla groups by displaying all its power across the whole country. Also, the moral of the guerrilla is another weak point the regime can use to defeat the insurgency. In sum, both sides will need to find balance between the military actions and a necessary investment on logistics, propaganda and other lateral factors that will play a key role in how their strategy evolves through the years. Should no victor raise from sudden-death conditions, the historical account, as seen from those that suffered the most (the civilians) will have the final say over who obtains the victory.
