About the Game

Hertzschlag is a semi-cooperative game about the power grid, renewable energies and a looming blackout.

Players represent communities of households whose decisions impact the power frequency. Getting a solar panel on your roof increases the overall amount of electricity produced and thus increases the frequency. Getting an electric car in contrast consumes more electricity, hence lowering the frequency.

Furthermore, events like unexpected and extreme weather influences how much wind and solar energy is produced and can unbalance the frequency which players need to rebalance through their choices.

Players have secret goals that award victory points at the end of the game and try to win by having most. However, if the frequency is too unbalanced and players fail at rebalancing it, a blackout happens and all players lose immediately. Concluding, players need to cooperate at least a bit to prevent a blackout. Or should you focus on your own personal goals and hope that other players will prevent a blackout?!
