About the Game

Koma Janggi (꼬마장기, コマチャンギ) is a simplified variant of Janggi played on a 7×5 board. It is one of the commercially produced mini-Janggi variants, created by Zainichi Korean(Koreans in Japan) designer Kim Song-il.

Each side has a reduced set of pieces: Whale (King), two Flying Fish (Chariots), two Crayfish (Horses), and three Turtles (Soldiers). The palace retains the same structure as in standard Janggi, but Advisors are replaced by additional Horses.

Players win by capturing the opponent’s Whale or by reducing the opponent to two or fewer pieces. However, if a player is reduced to two pieces but can immediately capture the opponent’s Whale on the next move, the game continues and that player wins upon capture.
