Players take on the roles of apprentice wizards who visit magical caves to obtain dice that generate magical power. When an apprentice wizard acquires dice scattered in a cave, the magical power flowing from the dice changes the number of dice he holds. The overflowing magical power also affects the apprentice magicians watching from nearby. Only one type of dice can be brought back from a cave. Which apprentice magician will obtain the most magic power?
In Nozoku Dice, you must pay attention to the sides of the dice, not just the top! Players are each assigned a color and start with that color's hand of cards and two of that color's dice. The rest of the dice go to the center of the table. Cards are played by taking a matching die of another player's color and placing it on the card. The one who played the card takes both the primary and secondary actions on the card, capable of affecting the two dice they started with or dice they gain throughout the game. When a die is placed on a card, other players may play cards that match the side of the played die that is facing them. This allows them to take the secondary action. Players don't take back up their cards until they completely run out—and receive a bonus—or are unable to take an action when required.
The game ends when all dice of any one color have been removed from the center. Players each choose a number from 1 to 6, and remove all the dice of that color from their acquired dice. Players calculate their magic power by totaling all the remaining dice. The player with the most dice receives a 2-point magic power bonus. The player with the most magic power at the end wins the game. The game also offers solo play.
