About the Game

Free print and play brigade to division level game about Jubal Early's sudden out of nowhere surprise attack on Washington DC, down the *eastern* side of the Potomac River. Fords along the Monocacy River to be discovered. Bridges can be burned - across the Potomac terminally. Historical forts are present as well as a tiny but thin/tall President Lincoln, for decoration. :-) And note on the Net "The Fort Stevens Incident" by the Jack Miller Center. Lots of Fog of War and panic and frustration on both sides. 9 turns. 8 miles per hex. Usual I go, you go turn sequence with my trademark Disruption mechanic enabling momentum of advance. "Winning: Rebels holding WashDC at end of any Union turn wins them strategic victory worth 2 games. If they don’t, Union wins the/1 game. But if Union has (had) 2 more divisions than Rebs, it’s a draw. Turn Sequence – each side, Rebs first then Union: Bridges burned? (75%, or 25% if enemy on other end.) All moves (with fording attempts), then attacks with any tactical advances into defended hex (only) with possible enemy Recovery from Disruption at that point. Supply line check. Victory check. Opponent’s turn next. “Stacking” and Operational Movement: Units move separately. Maximum of 3 pieces in a hex – never more – but only 2 may be infantry divs, and +1 Movement Factor to stack and +1MF to attack. No ZOCs. Inf and arty move 2 hexes, cavalry 4 - +1 if along 2 uninterrupted road hexes. Emrgncy Div can only be in Wash or a fort. Units cannot move or attack across un-bridged or un-forded river, but may at cost of +1MF may move/attack across un-forded/un-bridged creek." Grant had no use for Lew Wallace - the post bellum author of Ben Hur - after Shiloh, but Wallace saved the Capital with his early, irritating delaying action. The battle is the subject of a very good and accurate LionHeart film No Retreat from Destiny for which I have a review on IMDb.
