About the Game

The Codex Arena is a tactical 2-player duel game in which each player commands one of history's greatest military minds — Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, Genghis Khan, or Richard the Lionheart. The game is not a simulation of historical armies. Every player commands the same units on the board: infantry, ranged, cavalry, and siege. What makes each commander different is their unique deck of 20 command cards, built entirely from how they actually thought and fought throughout history. Players take turns spending coins to recruit units, move across a hex-based battlefield, and capture territories.

The board is divided into 7 territories across varied terrain — forests, mountains, sea hexes, and open plains — each affecting movement and combat. Combat is resolved through dice rolls modified by unit type and terrain position. Command cards can be played at any moment, including during the opponent's turn, adding a layer of tactical surprise and adaptation. The game is played over up to 5 phases.

At the start of each new phase, players collect coins and cards — with a bonus for every territory they control. Resource advantages compound over time, rewarding territorial pressure and strategic positioning. The first player to capture 5 territories wins immediately. If neither player reaches 5 by the end of Phase V, the player controlling the most territories wins.

Codex Arena was created by Rebel Thinkers, the publishing company behind The Codex of Inventions and The Codex of Warfare. All artwork is hand-drawn by Ukrainian illustrators in a Da Vinci-inspired manuscript style, consistent with the visual language of the Codex book series.
