About the Game
Vela is a family game for 2–4 players, with a playtime of 45 minutes.
Each player controls a family of 3 miners, excavating a mine in search of precious stones with varying values. The deeper layers contain the most valuable—but also the most dangerous—tiles.
On their turn, a player may perform 3 actions, choosing from excavating (revealing what lies beneath the land tile occupied by their miner), moving, or drawing cards. Using cards, as well as crossing bridges or climbing ladders, are free actions. Actions may be repeated.
While exploring land tiles, players may encounter monsters—which can steal ore or kill miners—as well as geological hazards that alter the landscape.
The game ends once 3 diamonds have been discovered. Players then tally their points; the one who has amassed the greatest wealth is named "Employee of the Month" (though all the precious stones go to the mining company).
Differences between 2nd edition and 1st edition: The main change is that the second edition significantly alters the actions available each turn; it now allows for repeating actions, changes which actions consume action points and which do not, and makes for a much more dynamic turn structure.
Also a new game piece has been introduced; rules updated for several cards; interactions adjusted with monsters and the resolution of certain events; and modified the number of pieces, player count, playtime, components, and more.
