About the Game
The mysterious animals of the Zodiac have gathered for a contest of champions. The noble Goat, stalwart Horse, dominant Dragon, and other Zodiac animals compete for supremacy of the kingdom as each moves to dominate their opponents.
Zodiac Chess is an expansion for traditional chess that transforms the familiar pieces into animals of the Zodiac while changing which pieces players can activate each turn. Six Zodiac cards correspond to the standard chess pieces, with animals including the Dragon, Goat, Horse, Monkey, Ox, and Rabbit. For greater variety, the cards can be flipped to introduce advanced pieces with entirely new movement abilities, such as the Dog, Pig, Tiger, Snake, Rooster, and Rat.
At the beginning of a game, the six cards are shuffled into three pairs. On each turn, a player chooses one of those pairs and may move either or both corresponding pieces, in either order. This creates a new tactical puzzle on top of familiar chess movement, as players must plan around which combinations of pieces can be activated together. Most standard chess concepts still apply, including capturing and castling, while the advanced Zodiac pieces introduce additional movement possibilities.
Victory also works differently from traditional chess. There is no need to check or checkmate the opposing king. Instead, a player wins by eliminating all of the opponent's pieces corresponding to either animal in any one of the three card pairings. This means several different victory conditions are available simultaneously, encouraging players to attack vulnerable animal groups while protecting their own.
