Magical Athlete Insert and Upgrade
There are some fantastic inserts for this game already out there, but I really wanted to make it possible to store extra characters from expansions or fan content into a single box. After a bit of experimenting, I found that an angled holder made it easy to store the characters in a much smaller space while still making it trivial to find them when you need to. From there I went a bit overboard on my original intention and ended up designing an insert that speeds the setup and play up, but also serves as a 3D upgrade by making a lot of the components become scenery for the game.
The "stands" that hold the characters has 22 slots (11 rows) that can each hold 5 normal sized racers. That means, in theory, it could hold up to 110 racers. That should cover the base game plus 2 expansions. The larger characters (Huge Baby, Legs) get stored in the bins on the side. We'll see how many oversized characters come in the future but there is still plenty of room for a few more in those.
The trophy/ribbon holder serves as a podium using a couple stands and can optionally use magnets to hold the two pieces together even better. The point trays also have slots for magnets which allows them to click together into a single tray during play. The magnets are 100% optional, but if you have some magnets of the right size lying around, they are extremely satisfying (who doesn't love magnets?!). The trophy tokens are not tight in the trays so if you don't want to use them as podiums you can very easily remove the tokens to hand them out like normal. Once on the stands, there are spaces for the 1st and 2nd place athletes to stand giving a nice presence to the winners. Huge baby has no real hope of fitting though, so I suggest never letting that player win ;) (or just put the baby next to it with the token if that happens).
The "stands" holder has two slots on the bottom, near the back that you can friction fit in two risers. This gives the stands an amazing presence next to the board and makes it look like you have an actual audience. It also makes grabbing the characters really easy and putting them away. Since there are plenty of spaces, filling every other row for now leaves a great amount of space for just the core box.
Notes:
- If you want to use the 3D elements of this insert, be sure to print the shown quantity on each file. If you do not want to, you can skip the risers/holders and instead of printing the extra-storage-b print two copies of extra-storage-a (to give you more storage space).
- The podium trays and the token trays have slots for 2.5x6 mm magnets in the bottom. Depending on your print they may fit tight when pushed in, but if not, just drop a heaping bit of glue over the magnet and let that dry. You want it to be heaping because it shrinks down as it dries and should dry nice and flat (see my pictures). If you have smaller magnets you can just put 2 or 3 in the slot instead.
- Be absolutely sure you print the risers/holders sideways. If you print them vertical, they will be very fragile and prone to breaking. I've oriented the models that way on purpose.
- I decided to make stickers for mine to give it a bit more flair. I'll see if I can share my stickers somewhere in the future but since two of them use art from the game that I don't own I'd need to get permission. If you want to make your own, it's really easy. For the sides of stands make a 6"x0.85" sticker (x2). If you want the front checkered flag look that is 7.15"x0.5". And each of the podium labels is 1.15"x0.45". I printed mine onto a full sheet label but also added a touch of glue around the edges/corners for added stick.
- When putting the stands for the podiums back, be sure to put them in before the podiums. The are held in place by the podiums in the corner of the box.
- The card tray is 100% sized to fit sleeves. However, if you use thick sleeves, you will likely only be able to fit the core box plus one expansions worth of cards. I do plan to adapt this to fit additional expansions in the future though so I may come up with some alterations to accommodate once we know what is coming.
- **Contains:** Base game, with plenty of room for future expansions or fan content,
- **Lid Lift:** No. Once futures boxes come up, tracks will likely need to be stored in another box or there will be lift.
- **Sleeves:** Yes
- **Supports Required:** No. The slots of the podiums do require bridging though. I highly recommend printing without supports though as they would be very hard to remove.
- **Features:** Removable trays, easy print, 3D upgrade, magnets, faster setup
- **Room for Future Content:** Yes, absolutely (that is the point!)
- **Vertical Storage Support**: Yes
