Designer's Description

Card Cascade is a complete store-and-play system, now adapted to Compile. The name refers to the way in which the cards cascade out to make them easy to see when playing. Now in upgraded v6.5 - see below for the list of improvements.
Boost Me I have spent a lot of effort making Card Cascade super useful, and I want others to be able to easily discover it too. The most effective way is for you to Boost the model - if you like it, please do. Thank you! :)

With Card Cascade for Compile,

  • Each Protocol is in its own slot, easy to see and access during play
  • Compact, secure storage when not in use
  • Separate designs for sleeved and unsleeved cards
  • A single box holds 15, 18 or 30 Protocols. 18 is a set like Main 2, Aux 1 and Aux 2.
  • Printing requires no supports and the design fits on most printers
How it works

Each Cascade is a box that contains sliding card holders, designed to hold 7 cards each.

To play, remove the lid and insert the removable pushers into the keyed slots. Then put the box on top of the upside-down lid, so the pushers lift each row of card holders into a stepped cascade. Every Protocol becomes visible, making it easy to see which ones are available, and easy to pack up as well.

When you’re finished playing, lift the box out of the lid, store the pushers in their dedicated compartment at the back of the box, and slide the lid back over the top. The cards are now held securely with little wasted space.

Box Labels

Each box has room for a slide-in label in front and on the side. The front label is the same size for all boxes, and the side labels come in a few standard sizes. The label width in mm is part of the box “model number”, see below.

The Compile Labels print profile contains all possible labels. You can choose the label style that has the logo, or a plainer label. Note that the logo label has a lot of fine detail and may need a finer 0.2mm nozzle to print well.

Printing Card Cascade

Each Cascade is supplied as a complete 3MF project with organized build plates:

  • Box and required pushers
  • Lid with game logo
  • Sliding card holders

You will need to print one copy of each plate, plus any labels you want from the Labels print profile.

Assembly

Print the required parts, then do the following:

  • Insert the front and side labels of your desired design
  • Insert the sliding card holders in the box, starting at the back.
  • Hang the pushers so they fall into their storage compartment at the back of the box
  • Add your Protocol stacks to the box

Card Cascade model numbers

Card Cascade is also used for other games and each Cascade has a unique model designation like S5·10·7·45·Sl . This is what it means:

  • S = Small width, i.e. 3 horizontal card slots. Medium is 4, Large is 5.
  • 5 = Five sliding card holders.
  • 10 = Capacity of each static front pocket
  • 7 = Capacity of each holder slot, always 7 for Compile.
  • 45 = Width of the side label in mm.
  • Sl = Sleeved cards (Un = Unsleeved)

The same designation is used consistently throughout the system so that boxes, lids, pushers, holders and accessories can always be matched correctly.

Cascades are also identified by their maximum card capacity (for example 128 Cards ) to make them easier to distinguish at a glance.

Version compatibility

Every major printed component is marked with its model designation and version, currently v6.1.

Future version numbers will follow a simple compatibility scheme:

  • Major version changes indicate that new parts are mechanically incompatible with previous versions.
  • Minor version changes indicate cosmetic or printability improvements while maintaining compatibility with existing parts.

  • Card holders
  • Taller in the back so they nestle together better.
  • Added lips bridging one holder to the next. This makes it much less likely that you put a card in the wrong holder, or even between holders.
  • Simpler, more regular cutouts that are easier to print well.
  • Tighter margin with the sliders so they wobble less when in use.
  • Added finger holes to make it easier to get entire stacks of cards out.
  • Box
  • Added padding to the left and right front slots, so cards sit neatly in front of the rising slots
  • Added lips bridging to the first sliding card holder
  • Made the back pockets deeper so they are more useful for cards and accessories.
  • Lid
  • Moved the pusher slots further towards the edge to provide a more stable base for pushing up the card holders. Now aligns with the hole in the bottom of the box.
  • Existing components remain compatible, so you can choose to reprint a subset if you wish to upgrade

v6.4: 9 August 2026: Better use of back pocket

  • Box : The rightmost back pocket is not needed for a pusher, so it's made deeper and now has a finger cutout. This makes it more useful to store reference cards or rules.

v6.5: 11 August 2026: Optimised print and wider back pocket

  • Box & Holder:
  • The holes are now rectangular with no rounding effect. In numerous tests, this achieves the highest quality and fastest print.
  • Box :
  • The size of the rightmost back pocket has been maximised, making room for more cutouts, rules, etc.
  • The inside rear wall now has holes in it, saving around 10% filament and weight.

v6.6: 20 August 2026: Holder space increased

  • The holder now has 0.4 mm more space for cards, which makes the cards fit better. The holders still fit within the same box.

v7.0: 1 September 2026: Fix problem with pushers

  • The geometry of the pusher lock (which slots into the lid for play and the box for storage) was unstable for very shallow Cascades, affecting the unsleeved Compile Cascades. The change to fix this is small but breaks backwards compatibility, hence the major version increase.
