Flex Box - Modular Storage Organizer Box System

If you're like me, you probably have drawers full of small parts, tools, and craft supplies that never seem to stay organized, and let's be honest, sometimes they end up scattered across your desk or workbench too. This flex box system is an evolution of my original organizer box, but it's not just a version 2 - it's essentially a completely new model. While it shares similar size ranges with the original, the scope has expanded so much that it deserved its own release. The dimensions have been reworked with fine-tuned spacing and sizing for a more controlled, predefined set that enables multiple decorative hole patterns. The visual appeal has been refined to look great whether tucked away in a drawer or displayed on your workspace, and the customization possibilities have been expanded significantly. This is the result of everything I've learned, and I'm really excited to share it with you.

What sets this version apart is how much customizability is built in, along with carefully fine-tuned proportions and spacing that just feel right when you use them. The system consists of three parts that work together beautifully: a sturdy base container with elegant rounded corners, a customizable insert divider that lets you create the perfect compartments for your needs, and now for the first time, a proper lid to keep everything protected and dust-free. The boxes feature decorative punch holes in six different styles, from classic circles to sleek slots, so you can choose the aesthetic that best matches your workspace.

Ready to Print

I've included ready-to-print profiles in the most popular sizes, and these aren't just convenient for mobile users who can't access the Parametric Model Maker - they're carefully optimized for the best results I can offer. Each profile includes optimized settings for seam placement and speed control to ensure a consistent, high-quality finish. This means you can download and start printing with confidence, knowing the profiles are fine-tuned for great results.

Each size profile includes multiple STL file variations: different box versions with various hole patterns, multiple insert configurations, and a lid. This means you can pick and choose exactly what you need - select the box with your preferred hole style, the insert layout that works for your storage needs, and add the lid if you want it. Mix and match to create your perfect organizer.

For each size, I've generated profiles with different combinations of:

  • Insert types: Simple (single cell), half/half divider, and small-large- small (variable cell heights)
  • Hole shapes: Slotted, Teardrop, Diamond, Circle, Hexagon, or no Holes
  • Different corner radii for some sizes

This gives you plenty of ready-to-print options to choose from. Browse through the profiles and download only the specific parts you need for your project!

Features

The insert dividers are where things get really interesting, and this is one of the biggest improvements over my previous design. While the earlier version only allowed merging cells in the first column, this new system gives you complete freedom to customize the entire grid however you want. You can create grids with up to 6 rows and 6 columns, and then merge any cells anywhere to create larger compartments exactly where you need them. Maybe you want one big space for bulky items and several smaller ones for tiny screws? No problem. The cell configuration system makes it incredibly easy to customize the layout to match whatever you're storing. The boxes are also stackable, so you can build up a whole organization system that grows with your needs.

Parametric Model Maker (Customize)

Now, if the pre-generated sizes don't quite match what you need, that's where MakerWorld's Parametric Model Maker comes in. You have complete control over every dimension: length, width, height, corner radius, wall thickness, hole patterns and spacing, and the entire insert grid configuration. It's your organizer, built exactly the way you want it.

Grid Config Guide

When using the Parametric Model Maker, you can create completely custom insert layouts by merging cells in the grid. Here's how to use the cell_config parameter:

Syntax:

  • The cell_config parameter uses this format: "column,row,colspan,rowspan"
  • Multiple merged cells are separated by semicolons: "column,row,colspan,rowspan; column,row,colspan,rowspan"

Note: Always set the "columns" and "rows" parameters to define your grid size. The assembly view preview includes visual guides that show cell positions to help you identify columns and rows. There's also a simple merge option (colspan/rowspan) for the first cell, but cell_config will override it when used.

Example 1: Simple 2x2 merged cell in top-left corner

  • columns: 4
  • rows: 4
  • cell_config: "1,1,2,2"
  • Result: Creates a double-width, double-height cell at position (1,1)

Example 2: Multiple merged cells

  • columns: 4
  • rows: 4
  • cell_config: "1,1,2,2; 3,1,2,1; 1,3,1,2"
  • Result:
  • Large 2×2 cell at top-left (1,1)
  • Wide 2×1 cell at top-right (3,1)
  • Tall 1×2 cell at bottom-left (1,3)

Example 3: Custom tool organizer

  • columns: 3
  • rows: 3
  • cell_config: "1,1,2,3"
  • Result: Creates one tall compartment (2 columns wide, 3 rows tall) for large items on the left, leaving normal-sized cells on the right for smaller tools
