I have added a 2mm wall to the gate so that the tower is “closed” when the gate is up. In my tests, it hasn't affected dice rolling negatively at all. Points for downloads go to Arnhart3D, the creator of this model.

Earlier, I printed the original model, but there were a few things I wanted to improve. The position of the top flap was such that the dice usually missed it, so I removed it. That allowed me to make the tower shorter—three flaps are more than enough to ensure randomness. The tower’s depth was excessive, with too much space between the opposite flaps, so I made it thinner—providing more opportunities for the dice to bounce and roll on the flaps and off the walls. When open, the tower wasn’t perfectly square, so I added protrusions on the sides of the bottom flap to help it maintain its shape. The walls were too thick, so I cut out some material on the inside. In essence, the tower has the same functionality, but it's smaller and lighter. Also, see another profile with some graphics added. I used boolean modifiers to combined the “SoC - All Styles” and “wGate” profiles to make a Settlers of Catan profile that included the gate. Thank you to the original designer for this fantastic model. This works fantastically.

I've included two print profiles to start:

  • Classic - the dice tower that can be set inside of your own tray, inside of the lid of a game box, nested inside it's optional Wall, or stored inside my Hidden Book Storage Box (Dice Tower Storage/Tray) design.
  • wGate ('with Gate') - that comes with an included foldout gate to catch the dice. Note: the wGate option only catches about 80% of dice rolls, but it's sure to turn heads!

I personally prefer the Classic and to use it with my aforementioned Book Box designed to store the tower and be used as a dice tray.

Assembly

IMPORTANT: The ‘hinge pins' were not designed to be removed once inserted. Make sure the model is completely printed and prepared for assembly BEFORE INSERTING THE PINS!

  • Assemble laying flat with one side on top of the other, before inserting any pins!
  • Make sure the hinge pins are oriented so that the “O” etched into their side is facing the Outside of the model while it's laying flat.

Note: I recommend ‘breaking in' the main hinges by folding each model once before assembling the two pieces, it makes opening it the first time a hair easier.

Design Considerations
  • I designed these to print without support, and have had no trouble printing them.
  • They have circular ‘ribs’ on the slats to increase randomness in the rolls, especially given that all the slats fold along the same axis. I may in the future include designs with cutouts all the way through the slats, but I didn't want to run into issues rolling D4s.
  • I wanted to keep the length short enough to fit inside of a 9"L box, but to keep as many slats inside as possible.
  • The slats fold out to 30deg. This angle, combined with the ribs was to ensure the dice always flow down, while allowing the slats to protrude out as far as possible.
  • The gap between the slats is a minimum of 1.516" or about 38.5mm. This gap should allow for most standard dice to make it through without issue. Some larger D12s and D20s may not make it through (but should come back out easily by turning it upside down due to the slats folding).

Note: It's important to make sure printer is calibrated and maintenanced to ensure the flaps fold out smooth. Most people don't have any issues but occasionally one of the slats doesn't swing freely; though, it should free up over time.
