Targi + Expansion board game insert organizer
Print Profile 35h 19m 668 g PLA
Plate Details (11)
This is a highly thematic insert for the board game "Targi" (2012) for 2 players (or 3-4 with an official variant! ) set in the tuareg desert culture, focusing on resource collection and tight action selection. It also supports the aptly named expansion “Targi - The expansion” and you can store everything in the base game box. You can still use the expansion box to store a specific map frame I made for the game. If you own the BoardGameGeek premium bits for this game as I do, they will fit the organizer pieces and you can store the old cardboard pieces in the expansion box, just like me.
- No lid lift
- Supports sleeved cards
- Supports base game + expansion in base game box
- Supports BoardGameGeek store premium goods, gold & metal victory point tokens
- Game box can be stored horizontally or vertically
- Thematic insert with textured / decorative components
I play this game a lot with my wife and I always wanted to make a nicely presented insert for it. The game is truly a timeless gem and given its size it can really be a welcome addition in anybody's collection. The game designer even made an “official” 3-4 players variant for which I offer some additional meeples and which will fit in the insert as well!
This should be an easy model to print. Since I wanted to present the various card holders and the goods tray as woven baskets, the lids cannot be printed upside-down (perhaps you can try with some supports, if it works for you then we can add a profile). The lids will therefore require standard snug-type supports. I also added some color accents which can be disabled if you prefer, however the color swaps are really few even if you don't have a multicolor printer.
Mind that some of the objects have fuzzy skin painted (the desert-like pieces).
The palm tree branches will come flat out of the printer. To curl them in the same direction as shown in the photos, take a heat-resistant cup, like a mug, pour some water at 75-90°C and immerse the branches, one at the time . Hold the branch from the connecting tip (don't drop or immerse the whole thing or the connector might deform). Keep immersed for a few seconds and when you pull out of the water bend the leaves as desired. Repeat for the other branches until you are satisfied. Be careful not to burn your fingers! Use a tong or tool to handle the piece if you're not confident with your bare hands.
I used Bambu Lab matte Caramel PLA for the woven-basket trays, but you could also stick to a single brown filament (either caramel or dark brown matte, especially if you don't plan to weather the boxes).
For the woven-basket trays I applied a ground brown wash (Mr Weathering Ground Brown) using a brush and then wiping out the excess with a cloth after about 1h. Probably a wood stainer gel in similar dark/coffee brown color would have worked too. You don't have to do this but it's a rather simple trick and really enhances the look of the pieces. My designs always allow to get extra creative, and it's something you can do or decide later anyway.
Check the video below for an overview of each piece and how they fit the base game box:
The palm tree sitting on top of the “oasis tray” is removable and can be disassembled quickly. It is stored together with the targia and the robber meeples. It's a fun little addition I wanted to have there.
1. Place first the tribal expansion cards holders, the goods tokens tray, the sand dune cards holder, and the trays for the targia, the robber and the meeples as shown. 2. The palm tree can be disassembled and placed in the same tray next to the targia and the robber meeples. Add the goods cards holder and the victory point tray as shown.
3. Place the “oasis” tray with the gold and the other pieces, the 1st player token on top of the goods cards and sand dune cards holders. Place the map border cards holder on top of the tribal expansion card holders. 4. Place the base game and expansion manual at the top and you're done. I recommend not throwing the expansion box away as you could use it to store the map frame I made for the game and more upcoming content in my collection .
