Designer's Description
Lucky Numbers – Travel Edition

Looking for a compact game that keeps both children and adults entertained while traveling?

Lucky Numbers – Travel Edition is a pocket-sized version of the classic dice game Shut the Box . It is easy enough for children to practice basic addition and subtraction, yet surprisingly strategic. A bit of luck helps—but choosing the right numbers to close can make the difference between winning and losing. Don't be surprised if the adults want "just one more game!"
You can play it alone or in a group.

Inspired by the Original

This design is based on the wooden game sold by Goki under the name "Shut the Box."

All rights to the original game and rules belong to Goki. This 3D printable version is intended for personal, non-commercial use only .

Why This Version?

Unlike the original, this travel edition lets you close the lid at any time without disturbing the game . Your current game is safely stored inside, so if you suddenly have to leave the train, plane, or café, you can simply continue later.

This model is part of my growing Travel Games Series . Every game has exactly the same outer dimensions, making them easy to stack and store in a backpack or travel bag.

The enclosed design also keeps everything neatly in place, making it ideal for playing:

  • 🚗 in the car
  • 🚆 on the train
  • ✈ on an airplane
  • ⛺ while camping
  • ☕ in a café

...and the best part: no batteries required! 😉

Printing

I printed the model in PLA.

Use pieces of filament for the hinges, and the axis for the numbers.
Likely, depending on your printer, you have to drill out the holes with a 1.8 or 2.0 mm drill.

Recommended settings
  • Large parts: 0.20 mm layer height
  • Small parts (latch, dice): 0.15 mm layer height
  • Infill: 15% for all parts
  • Dice: print with 100% infill so every side has the same weight and the rolls remain as fair as possible.

A filament color change makes the numbers and the lid stand out nicely, and a multi-material printer gives an even better result.

How to Play
Objective

Close as many numbered tiles as possible.

The perfect game is achieved by closing all the numbers. If nobody manages this, the remaining open numbers are added together. The player with the lowest score wins .

Setup

Start with all numbered tiles in the open position.

Rules

The youngest player begins by rolling the two dice.

For example, if the dice show 3 and 6 , the total is 9 . The player may close one tile equal to the total, or two tiles whose values add up to the total.

Possible moves are:

  • 9
  • 8 + 1
  • 7 + 2
  • 6 + 3
  • 5 + 4

Only one tile or one pair of tiles may be closed after each throw.

The player continues rolling as long as a valid move is possible.

The turn ends when no remaining combination matches the dice total. The values of all still-open tiles are added together to form that player's score.

The next player then starts a new game with all numbers reopened .

After every player has had the same number of turns, the player with the lowest total score is the winner.

And as always:

If you print this game, I'd love to see your version!
