Designer's Description

This is an insert i developed for the Board Game Heroes of Might and Magic III.

It will fit all essential content (opiononated!) from the first two crowdfunding campaigns (10 factions) in two of the boxes.

The idea is to reduce transporting volume and quicken setup times, while also providing some integrated minimalistic player dashboards.

Uses a few magnets and one part needs to be split by your slicer (unless you can print 300mm x 200mm). Se the “Please note” section for details.

  • Box A holds:
  • Map tiles
  • Map tile overlays
  • Cards which are faction independant (neutrals, abilities*, spells, artifacts, …)
  • Dies
  • Most tokens
  • 80 black cubes (should be enough for 4 players)
  • Resource props (although the card board ones would have been way easier to store, but i painted them so it didn't feel right to exclude them. card board ones should also fit, but of corse not the complete endless stack)
  • Round tracker
  • One battle board
  • A print of the community rule book and some player sheets
  • Maybe(!) one or two mission books (Hoping for a community reprint with all missions and campaigns or maybe i will cut and rebind the existing books)
  • Box B holds:
  • Attention!: This only really fits inside the stretch goal box from second campaign, as this is the tallest one. If you don't have this one, store the two factions you hate most somewhere else or ignore the lid lift of around 10mm (I personally don't like that) - you can reduce but not dissolve the lift if leaving away the second battle board and the container for Tarnum.
  • 10 stackable (or "slidable") faction containers which double as a dashboard for the towns, holding:
  • Town board
  • 3 hero boards
  • Faction cubes
  • Faction unit cards
  • Statistic cards to fit every faction hero
  • Hero specialty cards
  • 1 morale token (well at least if there were enough. Archon included only 2 for the 3 factions in base game)
  • Faction tokens (build, recruit, mage guild)
  • 2 movement tokens (They are sufficient if using the included hero dashboards)
  • 2 magic arrow spells (so you don't need to search in the big pile and don't draw as many of them during the game)
  • 4 additional dashboards for heros
  • Container for the 2 multi-faction hero boards (Tarnum)
  • Some space for hero and town models
  • Second battle board
  • Not stored (I just threw them in two additional boxes and have never used them since):
  • Unit models nor most of the props
  • Most mission books
  • Stuff only used in Battlefield expansion
  • Playmats from naval expansion
  • Crag Hack

Most stuff is organized to be just placed on the side of the board for a quicker start.

Please note: This insert works, but it is not perfect:

  • Faction containers slide into each other and will stay together most of the time when lifting in or out of the box, but not every time. Maybe i will address this in the future, but it is no planned. Feel free to modify the tolerances in Insert.fcstd in FreeCAD to your own liking.
  • The resources container require 12 magnets (3mm diameter x 3mm length).
  • I had to remove 4 or 5 ability cards to fit them inside the tray, but for some reason there were some abilities more frequent than others, so this also ensures that all ability cards exist in the same amount.
  • Some containers barely fit their content. Sleeved cards are NOT supported (and i don't see how it could fit)
  • Although there are 3 card slots in each faction container, due to height limits, cards can not always be sorted cleanly by type inside them. The perfectionist inside me really hates this, but i don't have a better idea.
  • Map tiles container propably needs to be split. Use your slicer for that, it will produce the best result and can produce pegs and holes for centering.
  • I developed this insert over the course of over a year (with estimations of exact content numbers from the second campaign), with different design philosophies and it really shows. For example, at an earlier stage i used way more magnets, but eliminated most of them over time. This insert is therefore not the prettiest.
  • The insert is at full capacity. If you have backed the third campaign (or plan to buy it later), you will need a new solution. But so do i! (I backed the big box this time and will do an insert for that - promised!).

All parts are designed for 0.2mm layer height, so i recommend printing it like that. It is already tight in there without introducing more sources of tolerance.
