Designer's Description

A parametric playing/collection cards case that closes on itself like a book.

  • Print-in-place design (no assembly required).
  • No excessive overhangs (max. 35° on conical hinge pins and max. 45° hinge knuckles).
  • Easy multi-color printing with a minimum number of filament swaps.
  • Optional magnet holds (recommended if you plan to store the case vertically).
  • Last-card cutout , picker aid.
  • Cover lid to prevent the first card from slipping out too easily.
What can you change?

This model is fully parametric. Download the Fusion 360 design file, open it, then go to Solid → Modify → Change Parameters to customize any value, so you can fit any card and deck size you like. Some values may require further adjustments to the model.

Interresting parameters shortlist

Parameter Default Value Description
card_width 64 mm Width of a single card
card_height 89 mm Height of a single card
card_clearance 2 mm Extra clearance around each card (avoids a “too perfect” fit)
deck_height 25 mm Total height of the stacked cards (you may need to change the picker_* parameters if you change this to high or low values).
deck_clearance 5 mm Extra clearance above the deck (ensures the cover closes smoothly, but may allow to the cards to move inside the case)
cover_thickness 5 mm Thickness of the cover (affects hinge dimensions)
cover_padding 5 mm Padding between the cover edges and the cards box
magnet_* Various holes/tolerances for magnet inserts (may require adjustments to cover parameters)

Scaling

It is not recommended to scale the model (uniformly or on a single axis) in your slicer.

Instead, adjust the model parameters to change its dimensions.

Changing the cards or deck sizes

You should customize/use the .f3d file and adjust the following parameters:

  • card_width: Width of a single card.
  • card_height: Height of a single card.
  • deck_height: Thickness of the card deck.

The entire model automatically adapts to these values. The cover, spine, hinges, and other dimensions are all computed from these parameters.

Two additional parameters control the clearance around the cards:

  • card_clearance : Extra clearance around each card. This prevents an overly tight fit and makes the cards easier to grab.
  • deck_clearance : Extra clearance above the deck. This ensures the cover closes smoothly but may allow the cards to move slightly inside the case.the cards to move inside the case).

These parameters can be adjusted to give the cards more room if needed.
deck_height : 10mm
deck_clearance : 2mm

Changing the magnets sizes

The main parameters are:

  • magnet_diameter : Diameter of the magnets.
  • magnet_case_height : Height of the magnet, on the cards side.
  • magnet_lid_height : Height of the magnet, on the cover/lid side.

To adjust the fit of the magnets, an additional parameter is available:

  • magnet_tolerence : Adds extra clearance around the magnets (since magnets are not always manufactured to exactly the same size). It's defaulted to 0.2mm from another parameter ( tolerence_hole ), but can be adjusted independently.

If you increase the magnet diameter too much, the magnets may become larger than the available wall thickness, resulting in geometry errors in Fusion 360.
Badly generated ( magnet_diameter : 6mm)

If this happens, you will also need to adjust the following parameters:

  • case_wall_thickness : Controls the thickness of the case walls. Increasing the value will give more room for the magnets (as a rule of thumb, 3 x case_wall_thickness > magnet_diameter works well).
  • cover_padding : Increasing the wall thickness will “eat” the cover padding around the case. Increase this value to restore the original appearance and give enough room to the magnet tab.

magnet_diameter : 6mm
case_wall_thickness : 3mm magnet_diameter : 6mm
case_wall_thickness : 3mm
cover_padding : 7mm

Making the cover detachable/multiple parts

This customisation might be tricky and would require a few iterations to achieve the fit you want.

The most important parameters are:

  • cover_hinge_inner_length : Computed from the cover thickness by default. Reducing it makes the cover easier to detach. Values between 1mm and 0.5mm generally produce good results.
  • cover_hinge_pin_tolerence : It's defaulted to 0.2mm from another parameter ( tolerence_friction ), but can be adjusted freely. Increasing it makes the cover easier to snap on and off, but excessive values may introduce noticeable play and wiggling in the hinges.

cover_hinge_inner_length : default (computed) cover_hinge_inner_length : 1mm cover_hinge_inner_length : 0.5mm cover_hinge_inner_length : 1mm
cover_hinge_pin_tolerence : 0.5mm

Magnets

The model includes two magnet holes to help keep the case closed:

  • Cover: Ø 3 mm x 1 mm
  • Case: Ø 3 mm x 2 mm

A tip of glue or fine-tuning the magnet_tolerance parameter might help.

Coloring

The design of the case is made to be easily colored using height coloring (manual color swap friendly).
