Unlike previous projects from the company, Kobold Quarterly was available to the public. Kobold Quarterly ran for 23 issues, with the final issue produced in October 2012. Kobold Press had their sales quadruple in January 2023, in response to customers seeking D&D alternatives in light of the new, more restrictive 'Open Game License' (OGL) announced by Wizard of the Coast. Kobold Press partnered with Paizo that same year to develop their own 'Open RPG Creative License' (ORC); this would be an open, perpetual, and irrevocable system-agnostic license stewarded by a nonprofit. They have also started testing a "Project Black Flag" meant to be an alternative to OneDnD. In 2024, Kobold Press released the Tales of the Valiant roleplaying game built on the Black Flag Roleplaying (BFR) system. BFR is a complete, free, open game system, fully compatible with fifth edition Dungeons & Dragons, and powered by the open gaming community. In 2025, Kobold Press debuted their first card game, Necromancer. admin comment this is a publishing imprint being used by Open Design LLC it appears that different products will use a different imprint we will keep these entries separate
