Jason Allen, led Midjourney to generate an image which Jason printed onto a canvas and entered into the Théâtre D'opéra Spatial digital art competition where it won first place. The platform operates primarily through Discord, a community-based chat application. Users join the official Midjourney Discord server, where they can access the bot by typing commands such as /imagine followed by their desired prompt. The AI then generates four image variations, from which users can choose to upscale, modify, or re-roll for new results. Midjourney includes different model versions (such as V5, V6, and the Niji models for anime-style art), each offering its own strengths in realism, composition, or artistic expression. Users can fine-tune their outcomes using parameters that adjust things like aspect ratio, style, and detail level. Research in a 2023 study, has suggested that the images Midjourney generates can be biased. For example, even neutral prompts returned unequal results on the aspects of gender, skin color, and location. In October 2023, Rest of World reported that Midjourney tends to generate images based on national stereotypes. Prior to May 2023, Midjourney implemented a moderation mechanism that prohibited the use of language associated with explicit content and those of religious and political figures. On January 13, 2023, a lawsuit was filed by three artists alleging the the unauthorized use of copyrighted work of over 4,700 artists.
