Piet Hein
Piet Hein, also known as Kumbel Kumbell, (December 16, 1905 - April 17, 1996) was a Copenhagen-born Danish puzzle and game designer, scientist, mathematician, inventor, and author. Among others he invented the game Hex, Tactix (aka Bulo or Nimbi) and the soma cube. Hein received an honorary doctorate from Yale University in 1972. The HNLMS Piet Hein was an Admiralen-class destroyer of the Royal Netherlands Navy which was named after the 17th-century Dutch admiral; the ship took part in the Battle of Badung Strait on the night of February 18-19, 1942, where she was torpedoed and sunk by the Japanese destroyer Asashio. Mathematician and game designer Piet Hein died in Funen, Denmark, in 1996.
